My Cancer Treatment Plan
I met with my Medical Oncologist, Dr. Keech, June 23rd and he is having me move forward with having a bilateral mastectomy. So they are taking my breasts. The doctor's reasons for this recommendation were very sound and for many reasons. The doctor’s first concern is my age. He said he wanted to approach this as if I were going to live to be 100 years old. Unfortunately, there is no research that could ensure any of my other treatment options would get me to 100 years old. Plus, there is a high chance of me getting ovarian or lung cancer as a result. His next concern was that although the pathology report from my last surgery showed a few baby cancer cells, these cancer cells were spread all over and not just in one contained area. Then, in my mammogram, the radiologist annotated “suspicious area of concern, but probably benign” – the oncologist made it very clear that he did not like the word “probably”. The final dynamic was my family history of cancer. With all this in mind, he said the bilateral mastectomy is really the only option. Plus, with the mastectomy I have a 95% chance of not getting breast cancer in the future. I know that in the long run its all great, but for right now it sucks. :/
